Top 5 Reasons to Use Serv-U Managed File Transfer Server

  • Secure File Transfer & FTP Server Software

Secure File Transfer & FTP Server Software

Serv-U Managed File Transfer (MFT) Server is a secure FTP server software that supports many security protocols for secure file transfer. You can now stay compliant with policies such as PCI-DSS, HIPAA, FISMA, SOX, and more. Serv-U MFT Server supports:

    • FTP
    • FTPS (FTP over SSL/TLS)
    • SFTP (FTP over SSH2)
    • HTTP
    • HTTPS (HTTP over SSL)
    • IPv4 & IPv6
    • FIPS140-2 validated cryptography

In addition to FTP file transfer, Serv-U MFT software supports additional security protocols such as FTPS, SFTP, and HTTPS to secure data in transit.

    • When transferring files using FTPS, data in transit is protected using SSL/TLS, and confidential information is protected from tampering, snooping, leakage, or accidental exposure.
    • With SFTP, file transfers are secured via the Secure Shell (SSH) connection protocol. SFTP can be valuable in high-security environments where corporate firewall rules prevent the two-port FTPS protocol from operating properly as SFTP only uses one port for its connection.
    • Serv-U MFT Server also provides a secure Web transfer interface that helps people without FTP clients easily transfer files via HTTPS.

Serv-U MFT Server provides fine control over encryption and hashing algorithms, and can be run in FIPS 140-2 validated mode. Serv-U MFT Server allows you to perform file transfer over both public and private IPv4 and IPv6 networks. For additional security and encryption, Serv-U MFT Server also provides:

    • Multi-factor authentication (certificates and keys)
    • Multiple authentication sources (local, Active Directory®, database, custom)
    • Supports multiple keys (SSH/SFTP) for each user
    • File integrity checks (MD5, SHA1, SHA256, etc.)

Serv-U Managed File Transfer (MFT Server supports deploying and configuring multiple MFT server instances to scale according to growing file-transfer needs. This scalability option is known as N+1 horizontal scaling where multiple Serv-U MFT Servers are deployed inside the firewall, authenticated by Active Directory® (AD) and LDAP servers, and balanced by a network load balancer to distributed incoming connections to each Serv-U MFT Server instance. This configuration can be used for high availability scenarios with active redundancy where there is no single point of failure and load balancing to scale up or down to meet actual demand.

  • Secure Gateway for File Transfer in DMZ Networks

Secure Gateway for File Transfer in DMZ Networks

Serv-U Gateway is an optional addition to the Serv-U Managed File Transfer (MFT) Server that allows you to safely terminate file transfer connections in your DMZ. A two-tier deployment involving Serv-U MFT Server and Serv-U Gateway satisfies most managed file transfer requirements and helps you with meeting PCI DSS and other regulatory compliance requirements.

Serv-U Gateway provides defense–in-depth security to Serv-U MFT Server deployment, and

    • Terminates all incoming connections in the DMZ network
    • Avoids all incoming connections to the internal network
    • Never stores any data in the DMZ environment
    • Meets PCI-DSS and other regulatory compliance policies requiring multi-tier or multiple-zone deployments

The role of Serv-U Gateway is similar to that of a reverse proxy server in front of your Web applications or the email relays in front of your primary mail servers. Serv-U Gateway safely handles the traffic that should not be passed directly from the Internet into internal systems.

Product FAQ

  • Q:  Is Serv-U MFT Server a file transfer server or a file sharing server?

A:  Serv-U MFT Server can be configured as a secure file transfer server, a secure file sharing server, or both at the same time.

As a secure file transfer server, Serv-U MFT Server supports traditional file transfer (FTP), secure file transfer (FTPS and SFTP) and secure Web-based transfers (HTTPS) to and from user home folders and other folders you define.

As a secure file sharing server, Serv-U MFT Server allows end users to send files to and request files from anyone with an email addresses. A secure Web interface (HTTPS) provides access to all parties from anywhere.

By default, Serv-U MFT is configured to be a secure file transfer server. To enable Serv-U File Sharing, you must turn it on from the “File Sharing” configuration tab in the Management Console.

  • Q:  If I use Active Directory to authenticate my employees, do I need to put all my external partners in AD too?

A:  No, Serv-U MFT Server supports the simultaneous use of Active Directory for internal users and Serv-U user accounts for external users.

Note that if you are using Serv-U File Sharing, you may not need to create any external accounts at all; your end users will pick people to share files with using their email addresses.

  • Q:  I’m in a hurry – what’s the “lowest touch” secure configuration I can deploy Serv-U with?

A:  The following secure configuration will reduce tech support calls about connectivity and help you avoid the daily hassle of user provisioning.

Support Only Single-Port Secure Protocols: Set up Serv-U with SFTP and HTTPS listeners only. Make sure HTTPS is using a valid certificate from a commercial CA. Open the SSH (for SFTP) and HTTPS ports on your firewall.

Enable Active Directory Authentication (for Internal Users): Deploy Serv-U in the same domain as your AD server, and then turn on “Windows Authentication”.

Enable “Self Serve” Password Changes (for External Users): Turn on the “Allow users to change password” and “Allow users to recover passwords” options. This will automatically add a “Recover Password” to Serv-U’s sign on page.

Consider Enabling File Sharing: Serv-U File Sharing will allow your end users to share files with and request files from anyone – without needing you to create accounts for their business partners.

  • Q:  Can I deploy Serv-U in my DMZ network?

A:  If your server will be “in scope” of PCI-DSS or other stringent security regulations, then you should deploy Serv-U Gateway in your DMZ and link it to Serv-U MFT Server safely located in an internal network.

You should also consider deploying Serv-U Gateway in your DMZ if your security policy prohibits Windows Networking protocols or database connections in or from the DMZ.

Otherwise, deploying Serv-U FTP Server or Serv-U MFT Server in a DMZ is acceptable.
