What is a user device tracker?

A user device tracker is software that automates the discovery, mapping, and monitoring of connected network endpoints. It eliminates manual port mapping by pulling live switch connection data via SNMP, giving IT teams immediate insight into what is connected to the network and where. SolarWinds User Device Tracker is available as a module within SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted.

How do I locate a specific device on my network?

SolarWinds User Device Tracker lets you locate any connected device in seconds. Enter a search query using the device's IP address, MAC address, or hostname to see the corresponding switch name, physical port, and active VLAN. You can also search by Active Directory username if the device authenticates with your domain controller.

Can a network device tracker identify the user connected to a specific port?

Yes. By combining switch connection data with Active Directory logs, User Device Tracker displays the exact domain username associated with the device plugged into a specific port, helping you quickly identify the user. This user identification capability also maintains login history for compliance and investigation purposes.

How can I find which switch port a device is connected to?

SolarWinds User Device Tracker lets you search for a device by MAC address, IP address, or hostname to identify the switch and physical port where it is connected. You can view the associated switch name, port, VLAN, and other connection details to quickly determine where the device is connected on your network.

How can I track devices connected to wireless access points?

SolarWinds User Device Tracker monitors wireless access points and SSIDs alongside wired switches. You can search by MAC address, IP address, or device vendor to locate wireless endpoints. UDT also tracks the number of wireless devices connected to each access point and displays SSID-level endpoint connections for complete wireless visibility.

Can network device tracking software show a device's connection history?

Yes. User Device Tracker maintains a historical database of Layer 2 and Layer 3 connections for all monitored switches and access points. You can view when a device connected, where the connection occurred, and who was using the device. This history supports forensics investigations and compliance reporting.

What is the difference between a device whitelist and a device watch list?

A whitelist identifies devices approved to access your network. Devices not on the whitelist appear as rogue devices and trigger automatic alerts. A watch list tracks specific devices or users you want to monitor closely. When a watched device connects, UDT sends an alert so you can investigate or take action immediately.

Today, we own all sorts of [SolarWinds Platform] modules, and we’ll probably continue to keep adding modules over time. It’s all with the goal of trying to get further down the path of effective monitoring but also to make it easier for my team to find issues. And that’s where having all that data in there is really important for us.

Storage monitoring FAQs

What should a storage monitoring tool monitor?

A storage monitoring tool should track health, performance, capacity, and availability across SAN, NAS, and direct-attached storage. Key metrics include IOPS, latency, throughput, queue length, disk utilization, capacity allocation, and pool and volume health. SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor monitors arrays, RAID groups, LUNs, volumes, storage pools, disks, and controllers from vendors including Dell, Dell EMC, Hitachi, HPE, IBM, NetApp, and Pure Storage.

Learn More

How does storage capacity planning help prevent outages?

Storage capacity planning tracks consumption trends and forecasts when arrays, pools, LUNs, and volumes will reach their limits. SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor provides historical and forecasting capacity views. Automated alerts fire before thresholds are breached, and out-of-the-box and custom reports provide teams with the right data to anticipate storage needs, plan budgets and prevent unexpected capacity outages from disrupting critical applications.

Learn More

How can you forecast future storage capacity requirements?

SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor collects capacity data over time and projects when storage objects will run out of space. Automated capacity forecasting uses historical growth patterns to predict when arrays, pools, LUNs, and volumes will reach capacity limits. Configurable alerts trigger at warning and critical levels so your team can plan storage growth, right-size infrastructure proactively, and avoid reacting to capacity emergencies.

Learn More

What metrics are important for monitoring storage performance?

Key storage performance metrics include total IOPS, I/O response time, service time, queue length, throughput, and disk utilization. SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor tracks these metrics across arrays, RAID groups, storage pools, LUNs, and disks in real time. Hotspot detection surfaces I/O bottlenecks so administrators can identify which storage resource is causing contention before application performance degrades.

Learn More

How does storage monitoring work in a hybrid IT environment?

In a hybrid IT environment, storage spans on-premises SANs, NAS, and cloud-connected storage. SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor provides agentless monitoring across multi-vendor arrays regardless of location. When integrated with SolarWinds Observability Self-Hosted, AppStack and PerfStack correlate storage health with application, server, network, and virtualization performance to isolate root causes across the entire hybrid stack.

Learn More

How can storage monitoring tools detect storage hotspots?

SolarWinds Storage Resource Monitor detects I/O hotspots in real time using performance monitoring and threshold-based alerting. When IOPS, latency, or throughput exceed configured thresholds, SRM highlights the affected array, pool, LUN, or disk and alerts your team. PerfStack correlation lets you overlay storage metrics with application and server performance data on a single timeline to determine whether the hotspot is the root cause of an application slowdown.
