SNMP Tester
Use an SNMP tester to easily access network device status and ensure network health
Automatically discover and poll network devices
Automatically discover and poll network devices
Admins can use the SNMP protocol within Network Performance Monitor (NPM) to discover and add network nodes. For large networks, Network Sonar Discovery Wizard makes it simple to add bulk nodes. Alternatively, admins can select individual nodes for monitoring and add them to the Orion® Platform by providing their hostname or IP address then selecting SNMP as the polling method.
Admins can also set how often NPM should update hardware health stats and topology details. NPM will then automatically ...
Easily map network topology with an SNMP testing tool
Easily map network topology with an SNMP testing tool
An SNMP testing solution can help admins understand network topology, even if the infrastructure is large and dynamic. Because SNMP testing captures node locations and key metrics, NPM automatically builds visual topology maps to provide insights into the performance of network components. Use NPM to monitor on-premises or hybrid environments, including cloud instances, containers, and virtual machines (VMs). NPM is also designed to offer insight into packet paths outside your network, ...
Poll devices for key metrics
Poll devices for key metrics
SolarWinds® Network Performance Monitor uses SNMP testing and a management information base (MIB) to collect crucial metrics about the performance of devices across your network. View default or custom information related to network fault, availability, bandwidth usage, MAC addresses, and more. In the Health Summary widget, it’s easy to view interface status and health, and quickly scan details about downtime incidents. NPM displays relevant information in easy-to-use visual charts and ...

What is SNMP?
Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) has been in use since 1988 as a standard for monitoring and managing network devices on a TCP/IP network. Available in three versions, SNMP is still used today to collect and organize key information about IP devices and their components.
What is an SNMP tester?
An SNMP tester is a software feature of a network monitoring tool using the SNMP protocol to poll devices and discover relevant information and metrics. An SNMP tester uses a client-server architecture, with clients (managers) collecting information about servers (agents). A variety of network devices can function as agents, including computers, switches, printers, and routers. SNMP also uses a management information base (MIB) to request information about system status and configuration from various network devices. The MIB groups devices with unique Object Identifiers (OIDs), and managers can use these identifying numbers to query agents to discover information about device status and operations.
What are the benefits of an SNMP tester?
An SNMP tester offers admins greater visibility into their network devices and current network status, providing them with a comprehensive overview of network performance. With an SNMP tester, admins can run SNMP requests against any enabled network device or device component. Using SNMP monitoring and testing is useful for network admins who need to track network devices and servers, keep an eye on bandwidth usage, or monitor for downtime or traffic issues in real time.
How does NPM perform SNMP testing?
NPM allows admins to test SNMP-enabled nodes for devices managed within the Orion Platform. With NPM, admins can enable SNMP simultaneously on large numbers of servers. This makes it possible to perform an immediate SNMP test or configure the platform to run regular SNMP testing. NPM sends a message between managers and agents to locate devices and analyze information about device performance. The platform then displays this information in customizable dashboards and charts. Using SNMP queries, NPM can also build out the network map topology.
What other network tool features does NPM have?
Network Performance Monitor offers several advanced features for effective network monitoring. Admins can use NetPath™ for packet path visualization, run performance analysis with the PerfStack™ dashboard, and set smart alerts based on network topology.
