  • Automatic Configuration Backup

    Automatic Configuration Backup

SolarWinds NCM is change management software that automates performing backups of network device configurations on a regular basis for routers, switches, firewalls, access points, and more.

    • Schedule network configuration backups
    • Record network configurations for archival history
    • Easily view network configuration backups and history
    • Perform configuration changes based on logical groups such as location, department, manufacturer, or any custom property

One of the most popular features in SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager (NCM) is the ability to automatically backup network device configurations. Configuration backups can be scheduled to run whenever you would like them to—whether that's every day, every other Monday, or every two hours.

Network Configuration Manager includes a default configuration backup job that can be run out-of-the-box. With just a few clicks, you can easily modify the job to customize it for your particular backup needs. Network Configuration Manager also makes it easy to create your own job from scratch. Each job performs backups of network device configurations based on naming convention, machine type, or other custom groups.

Configuration backups are not only stored in a relational database for archival history, but also as flat files in an intuitive folder structure that makes for easy viewing.

With SolarWinds NCM's scheduled task feature, managing routers and other network devices has never been easier. Multiple users can view a summary of devices that are backed up or need to be backed up through the Web console.

    • Easily find end-of-sale and end-of-life dates for your Cisco® devices
    • Quickly prepare reports for capital budget forecasts and device replacement plans
    • Always know which devices are obsolete and unsupported

With tens, hundreds, or even thousands of routers and switches in use, how do you know when a device is approaching the end of its service life? How do you know whether you have obsolete, underperforming, or non-compliant devices in use? How do you forecast and justify replacement budgets? How do you assess the operational impact of updating outdated devices? Our change management software, SolarWinds NCM, makes it easier to answer these questions.

SolarWinds NCM includes an integrated database of end-of-sale and end-of-life dates for Cisco routers and switches. By using powerful heuristics, you can seamlessly search this database and view a narrowed list of bulletins for the exact models and configurations that match your devices. By selecting the right bulletin, you can then import critical service dates directly into your SolarWinds NCM device profile. You can even add custom notes to document and track which devices are slated for replacement. With all of this rich end-of-service data, built-in with your change management software, you can now easily create reports that can be used for preparing replacement budgets and coordinating device retirement and replacement.

Product FAQ

  • Q:  How is Network Configuration Manager licensed?

A:  Network Configuration Manager is licensed according to the total number of devices you’re managing. A managed device can be a firewall, router, switch or just about any other network device that supports remote access and a command line interface (CLI).

  • Q:  Is the end-of-sale/end-of-life database required for Device End-of-Life Management included with NCM and does it require an active Internet connection to us?

A:  Yes, the database is included with NCM v7.2 and above. It does not require an active Internet connection to use.

  • Q:  How many devices can one SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager instance support?

A:  By deploying APEs one NCM installation can typically handle about 30,000 devices. If you already have APEs for other SolarWinds products (e.g. NPM), you can leverage them for NCM, too.

However, the total depends on your system hardware, the types of devices monitored, and the number and concurrency of the jobs you run. Should you need to manage more devices, and you decide to add NCM instances, consider consolidating your views of multiple instances with the Orion Enterprise Operations Console.
