The Orion UnDP Utility is accessed through the SolarWinds
® Orion
® program group – Network Performance Monitor.
We’ll begin by looking at the features and navigation of this utility.
At the top of the window, the toolbar contains easy access to the most common tasks in the utility. From here, you can create a New Universal Device Poller, Assign Pollers and Transform Results. We will look closer at each of these features in this training.
On the left, you will find a listing of all nodes along with the option to sort them by vendor, custom group or other factors. This is similar to sorting nodes in the web console. Below that is a listing of all defined pollers. Selecting a poller from this list brings up the details of that poller on the right side of the window and a listing of all nodes queried by that poller directly below the details.
Directly above the poller details, are the options to edit the current poller or to delete it.
The New Universal Device Poller button will launch the wizard to guide you through adding a new poller. Begin by specifying the OID for your poller. If you do not readily have access to the specific OID, you can click the "Browse the MIB" tree button to find it. From there, you browse MIBs and select devices to identify the desired OID. You can also search the MIB tree from here as well.
In this example, you will add a new poller to show the chassis temperature on a router. Once you find the OID, be sure to test it against the device to make sure it’s valid. Select the valid OID and the wizard will automatically populate the OID field with the correct value.
You can also specify a name and description for the poller here as well as configure whether or not to keep historical information in the database. This data will be reflected when utilizing graphs and viewing historical data in the web console.
Next, select the nodes you wish to assign the poller to, and be sure to test the OID against those devices to make sure it’s supported. The next step is to define how the data will be displayed in the web console. Remember, if you chose not to keep historical data, you won't be able to use charts that graph data historically, and since we are working with temperature it would be nice to see a graph of that over time.
At any time UnDP’s can be assigned to additional nodes or interfaces by clicking the "Assign Pollers" button. From there, select the poller and then choose the nodes to assign it to. Once again, be sure to test the poller against the devices to be sure the OID is supported. UnDP’s can also be assigned through the web console, in the Node Management area or by selecting the UnDP you wish to assign when the node is initially added
In some cases, you may wish to convert the returned values to another format, in this case changing the temperature readings from Celsius to Fahrenheit.
Poller results can be transformed or converted using mathematical calculations. Again, you have the option whether or not to keep historical data and that selection will impact the types of graphing and display options for your data in the web console.
The Transform Results Wizard makes it easy to write formulas. It will supply the values, in the proper syntax, based on what you choose from the drop-down menus.
Once the formula is built, select your device and be sure to test the formula against the device to make sure it provides the expected results. You can also select multiple devices to apply the formula to on the Select Nodes page.
As with adding pollers, the final step is to choose how to display the formula results in the web console. Remember, if you did not select to keep historical data, certain gauges and charts will not be available to use.
Pollers can also be created and managed from within the web console, however you will need to know the specific OID you wish to poll, or use one of the default OIDs provided as you cannot browse the SNMP tree or do a MIB walk within the web console.
Creating a Universal Device Poller from the web console is very similar to the backend application. From Settings - Node and Group Management click Manage Pollers. Here, you can add a new poller, view existing pollers, view node assignments, or edit pollers that have been created in the web interface. Pollers created through the backend application cannot be edited through the web console interface. Pollers created here, will use predefined templates and OIDs.
