Must Have Features of SolarWinds’ Network Monitor

  • Dynamic and Customizable Network Mapping

    Customizable network mapping feature screenshot.

Drag and drop network devices to custom network maps and automatically view real-time Layer-2 link and connection utilization.

    • Automatically discover and display connections between devices on your network maps
    • Dynamically display link utilization in real-time
    • Create custom nested network maps remotely from your desktop quickly and easily, with drag-and-drop simplicity
    • View your network logically by floor, building, department, or geographic location and drill into more granular views

SolarWinds NPM’s built-in Network Atlas™ allows you to view your network pictorially and visually track performance statistics in real time via dynamic network maps. You can even automatically display the connections between network devices on your maps. Choose from several built-in geographic map templates or import a logical image of your own network based on floor, building, department, or larger geographic location. Multiple network maps can also be nested to provide drill-down capabilities.

In literally seconds, you can drag and drop devices into their appropriate locations on the network map so that you can view the health of all network devices at a specific location. Then, automatically discover and display the connections between your devices. Plus, Network Atlas enables you to create your network map locally on your desktop and then export the map to NPM where it’s immediately updated with the current status of the added nodes.

NPM is a network monitor that can also display specific network maps (and specific types of network information indicated on those maps) based on the viewer's authorization level or responsibility for particular regions of the network. For example, if a device falls within a particular subnet that a user is not authorized to access, then that user's map view will not go into alert condition, as the device is outside the scope of authorization. NPM’s integration with OpenStreetMaps, allows you to drill down right from the world map to the device status.

In addition, NPM’s Weather Map allows you to view Layer 2 link utilization between network devices in real time.

Monitor and alert on large, complex network routes including support for major routing protocols (RIP v2, OSPF v2 & v3, EIGRP, BGP) with our network monitor.

    • Monitor large, complex network routes with support for major routing protocols (RIP v2, OSPF v2 & v3, EIGRP, BGP)
    • Discover and monitor availability and status of VRF-configured routers, and view VRF polling table information (EIGRP, OSPF, BGP) and border interfaces
    • View routing tables, changes in default routes, BGP transitions and flapping routes
    • View router topology in a customizable Web interface

As your network size and complexity grow and change it becomes increasingly difficult to monitor and troubleshoot routing related performance issues. Manually retrieving route information using CLI is time consuming and error prone.

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) gives you the ability to monitor network route information and receive alerts when issues arise so you can reduce your time to resolution by providing a combined view of real-time network route information alongside device information. You can now view routing tables, changes in default routes, BGP transitions and flapping routes.

Additionally, Network Performance Monitor gives you a visual representation in the form of a network route topology map. It also provides visual alert indicators and audible alarms, and includes more than sixteen built-in network alert delivery methods and responses, including email, pages, SNMP traps, text-to-speech, syslog messages, and the launching of an external application.

  • Custom MIB Poller & Device Studio

Customized pollers to monitor any SNMP-enagbled device.

Easily create a custom poller to monitor any SNMP-enabled device, collect detailed data from MIB tables, and monitor virtually any statistic available on network devices.

    • Create custom CPU and memory utilization pollers
    • Create, import, or export a custom MIB poller to monitor any SNMP-enabled device
    • Collect detailed information stored in device MIB table
    • Monitor virtually any statistic available on networked devices

Out of the box, Network Performance Monitor (NPM) ships with MIB support that includes an MIB database that covers the vast majority of common network devices. But for that handful of odd devices that are in your network – or for newer devices that have MIB tables – you can now collect valuable and highly detailed management data.

NPM’s Device Studio allows you to easily create custom CPU and memory utilization pollers for those rare SNMP enabled devices that are not covered out of the box. You can create or import these pre-packaged pollers into NPM, and ensure the CPU and memory utilization properties of the device/interface monitored are available for out-of-the-box dashboards, network alerts, and reports.

For statistics other than CPU and memory utilization, NPM makes it easy to create a custom poller to monitor any device value that has an MIB, including virtually any statistic that a network device records. Examples include monitoring temperature on a switch, fan speed on a router, and battery status on a UPS. In addition to creating custom MIB pollers, SolarWinds has an extensive database of MIB information to determine the English name for each OID and the MIB to which it belongs.

You can also customize how you want the collected data displayed for graphing, alerting, and reporting purposes. And, using the MIB Transformation Wizard, you can convert MIB values into the units of measurement that are most useful to you. Choose from a list of common transformations, such as converting monitored CPU temperatures from Celsius to Fahrenheit, or create your own multi-MIB formulas to display, for example, the average interface throughput on a router.

You can collect detailed information stored in device MIB tables and easily create formulas such as the min, max, average, or sum of MIB entries in the same column. You can even export MIB pollers or transformations you've created, or import those created by others.

Product FAQ

  • Q:  How is SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor licensed?

A:  SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor is licensed by the largest number of the three following element types:

    • Interfaces: interfaces include switch ports, physical/virtual interfaces, VLANs
    • Nodes: nodes include entire devices (routers, switches, servers, APs)
    • Volumes: volumes are equal to the logical disks you monitor

    Network Performance Monitor license options:

    • Up to 100 elements of each type (SL100)
    • Up to 250 elements of each type (SL250)
    • Up to 500 elements of each type (SL500)
    • Up to 2000 elements of each type (SL2000)

Unlimited elements of each type are based on a recommended standard polling rate (SLX). For example: An NPM SL2000 can monitor up to 2000 interfaces + up to 2000 nodes + up to 2000 volumes.

Data collected for items other than interfaces, nodes, and volumes is effectively free and you can monitor as many as your system can handle. A few examples of other data types that can be monitored include:

    • CPU statistics
    • Memory statistics
    • Wireless radios
    • Syslog messages
    • Trap messages
    • Power supplies
    • System fans
    • Humidity sensors
    • Temperature sensors
    • Any other SNMP statistics
  • Q:  Can I buy multiple licenses of SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (e.g., an SL-100 and an SL-250) and monitor all 350 network elements from the same web console?

A:  No. A SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor license allows you to install a single database, and each database is associated with a single web console.

  • Q:  Is the SLX unlimited?

A:  The SolarWinds NPM SLX license entitles you to monitor an unlimited number of elements, but the throughput is rate-limited. Most customers will be able to monitor about 10,000 elements per polling engine (main or additional) with standard polling intervals. For more technical details, see this KB or speak with an SE.

  • Q:  Can I just use better hardware to poll more?

A:  No, the software enforces a throughput rate. However, if you change the polling interval to poll less often, it is possible to monitor more than 10,000 elements on a single server. For details on how the throughput rate is enforced see this KB.
