SolarWinds and its partner Unimission are proud to participate in the event this July. Let’s look at what’s in store.
Why Unimission and SolarWinds Are Attending
AI for Good was established in 2017 by the ITU, the United Nations' leading agency for digital technologies. The platform has grown from its origins, evolving into a vibrant multi-stakeholder community that includes governments, academia, industry, civil society, and UN agencies. The mission of AI for Good is to foster collaboration on practical AI solutions, ensuring that the benefits of AI are accessible to all and contribute to sustainable development. Currently, AI for Good has a thriving community of over 37,000 active contributors from more than 180 countries, and Unimission and SolarWinds are delighted to be among them. At Unimission, we are already leveraging AI in several areas. We have an AI-backed system for creating employee reference letters, and we also use an AI Copilot to automate tasks and track meetings. At AI for Good, we look forward to showcasing the practical applications of artificial intelligence in monitoring and observability. SolarWinds has already demonstrated how machine learning and intelligent data correlation can be used to make predictions around system performance, and this has evolved even further with the integration of SolarWinds® Service Desk and SolarWinds Observability SaaS.
Dimarjan on AI and Sustainability
Sustainability is core to Unimission’s approach, which is why we work with our sustainability partner, Dimarjan. To offset the carbon emissions generated by IT systems, Dimarjan plants trees on 2000 hectares of land in Angola. I spoke with Adrianus, founder of Dimarjan, to get his thoughts on the intersection of AI and sustainability:
"I think it comes in all shapes and forms. We all know that AI consumes a lot of energy, and you need a lot of servers to get it going. But if the right applications are found, it can also be a magnificent tool to improve how we do things. If you can automate processes, make things more efficient, and accelerate progress, it means you use less energy. On the agricultural and agroforestry side, we could also leverage AI more than we currently do. We are in touch with some companies that are quite advanced in using AI to determine the best planting schema for an agroforestry system. I think that's where we ultimately need to go.”
Adrianus acknowledges the potential risks and the importance of responsible AI use: “It depends on people's intentions. Many companies are leveraging AI for sustainability. If more resources are geared towards these initiatives, it could tip the scale towards the positive or more sustainable side.”
The SolarWinds Commitment to Ethical AI
Since 2021, SolarWinds has been guided by its Secure by Design principles, which have now been extended to establish responsible practices around artificial intelligence. AI by Design comprises four foundational principles that create a framework to help customers develop a secure, productive, and enduring relationship with AI-driven solutions.
- Privacy and Security: Safety first. This principle regulates personal data collection, storage, use, and protection. This includes role-based access control (RBAC), multi-factor authentication (MFA), and privileged access management (PAM) to prevent unauthorized entry.
- Accountability and Fairness: AI systems can perpetuate biases present in training data, leading to discriminatory outcomes. The Accountability and Fairness principle ensures a human is in the loop to regulate AI decisions.
- Transparency and Trust: Decisions must be accompanied by explanations to build a strong working relationship with AI systems. Transparency fosters deeper confidence in AI-driven processes.
- Simplicity and Accessibility: The user experience around AI is pivotal for IT Ops and DevOps teams managing mission-critical applications. A seamless, intuitive experience prevents fatigue and streamlines decision-making.
AI by Design is a dynamic and evolving set of guidelines that will adapt to emerging insights, helping ensure that SolarWinds and Unimission customers can safely leverage the best AI has to offer.
