General Notes
The following issues have been found in the current release of SolarWinds Toolset.
Upgrading
The following issues have been identified when upgrading Toolset.
- After upgrading from version 9 to version 10, Bandwidth Gauges that are not configured to auto-publish to the web may start publishing and then stop responding.
- After upgrading from version 9.2 Standard Edition to 10.4 Standard Edition, the TFTP Server service does not start. To work around this, manually uninstall the service, reboot, and then manually install the service.
Send To
Because the Toolset tools dynamically load the Send To options from the registry, some Send To options do not exhibit the appropriate results. For example, if you have loaded Skype on your Toolset computer, the Send To Skype option becomes available in your Toolset tools. This Send To option does not work.
Invalid Characters
Specifying invalid characters, including invalid IP address characters and ports outside of the port range, can cause unexpected behavior.
Home Routers
Toolset is designed to gather data from enterprise and server class hardware. Personal routers with SNMP enabled may not be detected by the tools.
Launching Toolset
The following issues have been identified when launching Toolset.
- If you have minimized the Toolset Launchpad to the system tray, you cannot relaunch the launchpad from the Start menu. To relaunch the Launchpad, double click the Toolset Launchpad icon in the system tray.
- Applications may stop responding when there are several tools running at the same time.
- When running Toolset on Windows Vista or Windows Server 2008, you must use a Windows account that includes administrator rights.
Engineer's Toolset Icons in Standard Toolset Launchpad
When running Standard Toolset, it is possible to encounter the shortcuts for tools only included in the Engineer's Toolset in the Recently Used Tools grouping. The links do not launch Engineer's Toolset tools. To correct the behavior, shutdown and restart the launchpad. Shutdown the launchpad by right-clicking the system tray icon and selecting Exit.
Launching Help from Classic Tools
Pressing F1 may not bring up help when running some classic tools.
Exporting
Exporting folders with extended ASCII characters in the name will not retain those characters.
Coexistence Notes
The following issues have been discovered when installing Toolset with other SolarWinds products:

Network Monitoring Tools Notes
The following Network Monitoring tool issues have been identified.
Network Monitor
It is possible to receive more than one notification from Network Monitor when you enable Event Notification. For example, you may receive 2 emails for a critical event, instead of a single email.
Network Performance Monitor
The following Network Performance Monitor issues have been identified.
- While Engineer's Toolset provides detailed statistics collection for analysis, troubleshooting, and diagnostics, the embedded database is not intended for long-term monitoring of networks with more than 500 network elements and has a 2GB limit on stored data.
- If you have a larger network and/or require data retention longer than 30 days, we highly recommend upgrading to Orion Network Performance Monitor (Orion NPM). Orion NPM is the perfect complement to Toolset's realtime network analysis and diagnostic capabilities. Orion NPM provides support for thousands of interfaces, virtually unlimited storage using a Microsoft SQL database backend, and includes a web-based interface to allow you and your entire team access to network availability and both realtime and historical statistics.
Realtime Interface Monitor
The following Realtime Interface Monitor issues have been identified
- If a refresh interval is set to less than 10 seconds, your Received Percent Utilization and Transmit Percent Utilization columns may incorrectly display
100%.
- If you have designated an invalid location in the auto-publish to web feature, an Export HTML error window is presented to you. This dialog must be closed by using the
X in the top right corner, as clicking OK does not dismiss the dialog.
- Setting the refresh time to less than 10 seconds may result in the
Receive Percent Utilization and Transmit Percent Utilization values showing as 100%.
- The application may not function properly when launched from another application. To work around this, start the Realtime Interface Monitor from the Start Menu.
Syslog Server SQL Server Additional Component
This additional component, which allows you to take advantage of a SQL Server database as a datastore for Syslog messages, works with case-insensitive databases. It is possible to switch a database from case-sensitive to case-insensitive. For more information, see your Microsoft SQL Server enterprise manager help.
SNMP Real-Time Graph
Application stops responding after clicking Add MIB if establishing communication process is interrupted. This only occurs if you try and close the window while it is searching. If you let it search on an invalid IP, it will come back and say it is invalid.
Bandwidth Gauge
The following Bandwidth Gauge issues have been identified.
- The application may stop responding after clicking File > New Window if a new gauge discovery process is stopped beforehand.
- The application may close unexpectedly after entering errant data in Receive Bandwidth and Transmit Bandwidth text fields.

- The application may stop responding after selecting the Copy All option.
Security Tools Notes
The following issues have been found in the Security Tools.
Remote TCP Reset
Application stops responding after clicking Edit > Copy All.
Edit Dictionaries
The application stops responding if the dictionary name has more than 60 characters.
The port list is not parsing correctly when displayed in a non-incrementing order. To work around this, list the ports in increasing order.
SCP/SFTP Server Notes
Using non-English characters in the name of the root folder does not work properly. To work around this, use only English characters in your root folder name.
Workspace Studio Notes
The following issues have been found in Workspace Studio.
- Using a range of IP addresses in the Neighbor Map gadget can cause an error when some devices do not respond to ICMP. To work around this, specify only devices that will respond to ICMP in the Search field. Increase the hops to get further out.
- The font background for downloaded configs may turn to black. To work around this, download the configuration again to refresh the text or save the tab and then reopen it.
- When using Print Preview in the IP Network Browser gadget, only the current view is shown instead of the entire tree.
- The application sometimes closes unexpectedly if a user overlays the Explorer panel with the Event Viewer panel.
- The application may stop responding due to high CPU usage.
- Workspace Studio still says
Evaluation after entering license information while the application is running (corrects itself when application is restarted).
- After adding an unsupported device to a gadget, the device is still shown with a check box next to the device.
- Gadgets do not show warning status when credentials are incorrect.
- The application may stop responding when interfaces are discovered and remembered. To work around this, reduce the number of remembered interfaces
- When running on Windows XP x64, the system does not show tips on detached charts. To work around this, open the gadget settings dialog and then cancel out.
- After renaming an interface, the new name will not be displayed on the Interface Gauge Gadget.
- You are not able to rename an interface if it was renamed before and the focus was not changed.

- Neighbor Map Gadget
- Map results are not displayed on detached gadgets until you rescan the map.
- Ping Sweep Gadget
- Ping Sweep continues working in background for 50 pings after you cancel the scan.
- Switch Port Mapper Gadget
- Results do not appear when the credentials for the Layer 3 device are incorrect.
- Scans may take longer to complete in the Workspace Studio versus the Classic Tool version of Switch Port Mapper. This is because the Workspace Studio version scans all VLANs. To improve the performance, reduce the SNMP Timeout and SNMP Retry values.
- Table Gadgets
- Column headers resize themselves after Print Preview and Print.
- TraceRoute Gadget
- The last column is truncated in Print Preview mode if user resizes gadget.
- WAN Killer Gadget
- After clicking Pause and then Continue, an incorrect IP Address is shown for the target device.
- An error message is sometimes displayed when trying to monitor an IPv6 device using TCP.
- After setting the gadget to listen for UDP packets and then setting it to stop listening, the port is still open.
- Web Gadget
- You may get script error message while using the web gadget if running on Windows 2003 even when the Suppress script errors check box is checked. To suppress the errors, disable Internet Explorer Enhanced Security Configuration.
