Automated Device Tracking & Switch Port Management

  • Automatically discovers, maps and monitors switches, ports, and network devices
  • Quickly finds devices and retrieves user name, port details, connection history and more
  • Enables searching on IP address, user name, Hostname or MAC address to track endpoints
  • Allows whitelisting and watch lists with automatic alerts and click-of-a-button port shutdown
  • Provides detailed switch port usage data, capacity analysis, and built-in reporting

Follow devices connected to your network

  • Locate a device based on IP address, hostname, or MAC address
  • Find available network ports
  • React quickly to security threats and events
  • Watch for when a distinct MAC address or hostname connects
  • Find out where a device has been on the network in the past
  • Pinpoint the last known location of an unconnected device
  • See which switches are operating at or near capacity
  • Deliver detailed reports on switch load to justify purchasing new equipment
  • Examine individual ports per switch, reclaiming unused ports

  • SolarWinds User Device Tracker (UDT) helps you watch devices and ports on your network to evaluate port usage and capacity.

With SolarWinds UDT, you can find the exact location of devices in your network, as well as detailed load analysis data. The software periodically polls switches and routers for data about what is connected to them. SolarWinds UDT saves both current and historical data about when and where a device has been connected in your network. In addition, you also get notifications and reports about every connected device.

For capacity analysis, SolarWinds UDT tells you the number of switches currently in use on your network in a time frame. This information gives you a clearer view of how the ports on your switches are actually used.

Discover and add network devices

SolarWinds User Device Tracker (UDT) uses a two-step process for discovering and adding network devices: first, add your network devices to a monitor, and then add the ports on those devices to a monitor.

Adding Devices - There are multiple ways to add devices in SolarWinds UDT, and the method recommended largely depends on the number of devices you want to add. When you install and run SolarWinds UDT for the first time, the Network Sonar Discovery Wizard opens.

Adding Ports - After you have discovered network devices, use the DISCOVER MY PORTS option in Discovery Central to discover and add ports to SolarWinds UDT.

Adding Multiple Devices (Network Sonar Discovery) - SolarWinds UDT employs the easy-to-use Network Sonar Discovery Wizard to guide you in discovering devices on your network. The Network Sonar Discovery Wizard recognizes network devices already in your SolarWinds database and prevents you from importing duplicate devices.

Adding a Single Device (Node) - Use the ADD A SINGLE DEVICE option in Discovery Central if you only need to add a single device.

View device and port status

Device Tracker Summary – The Device Tracker Summary view provides the following resources:

  • All UDT Nodes – Provides a list of nodes, grouped by node property, with a status icon and the node name; Expanding a node displays the ports for the node with a status icon and the port name
  • Total Ports Currently Used – Provides a chart with the total number and percentage of used and free ports
  • Active Alerts – Provides a list of the active alerts associated with SolarWinds UDT devices and ports
  • Top XX Nodes by Percent Ports Used - Provides a list of the nodes with the highest percent of ports used
  • Device Watch List – Keeps track of specific computers by adding them to the watch list
  • Total Ports Used Over Time – Provides a chart of the total ports used over time

Device Tracker Port Details – The Device Tracker Port Details provide the following resources:

  • Port Details – A list of port properties, including port name, port number, MAC addresses of the devices connected to the port, VLANs, and Duplex mode
  • Port History – A table of port history information, including time period, connected IP addresses, connected MAC addresses, and hostname

Node and Port Data - Node and port tooltips in SolarWinds UDT provide immediate status overviews of monitored nodes and ports. For a quick overview of any monitored node or port in the web console, hover over a node or port.

Find the switch and port where a hostname, IP, or MAC address is connected

SolarWinds User Device Tracker (UDT) provides you with the ability to locate a switch and port where a particular hostname, IP, or MAC address is currently connected or was connected in the past. This information can help you respond to a security or network problem.

Build and administer a device watch list

SolarWinds User Device Tracker (UDT) sends an alarm each time a particular IP or MAC address connects to your network. When you add a computer to the watch list, the software can then see when and where that computer connects to your network.

Alert on detected issues

SolarWinds User Device Tracker (UDT) provides device and port alerts you can use with the Advanced Alert Manager to monitor and respond to devices actively connecting to your network.

Present switch and port information using SolarWinds Report Writer

SolarWinds User Device Tracker (UDT) information is easily presented in a variety of formats using SolarWinds Report Writer. Report Writer is a quick and easy way for you to extract data from your database—including SolarWinds UDT statistics—for presentation in a useful form. A number of predefined SolarWinds UDT-specific reports come with your installation of SolarWinds UDT. Report Writer also enables custom SolarWinds UDT report creation, as necessary, using criteria and conditions you choose.
