Learn how Orion NPM simplifies virtualization monitoring across your virtual machine, switch, server, and storage environment.

Hello! Josh Stevens here, Head Geek at SolarWinds. Today we are here to talk about managing virtualized infrastructure within Orion. The latest version of Orion includes several enhancements and makes it even easier to manage all of your virtualization infrastructure components. We roll this data all the way up to the vCenter level, we show breakdowns at the datacenter level, all the way down to the ESX server and individual guest OS running in those virtual servers. Orion makes it easy to see, fault and performance metrics around each of these components, and of course, rolls that data up for reporting and for capacity planning purposes.

Let’s go ahead now and I’ll show you the latest version of Orion and we’ll see together how cool these features are, how much easier it is to manage datacenter and all your virtual components in the latest version of Orion.

The first thing you’ll probably notice is the Virtualization tab. This takes you to a new Virtualization summary page that shows you at a glance the health and performance of your overall virtualization infrastructure for the entire enterprise. You’ll also see that you have new VMware assets resources. What this does, it is rolls up your VMware server performance at the vCenter level, the Datacenter level, the Cluster level, and of course shows you performance of individual ESX servers and the guest OS that’s running there. If you hover over any of these components you’ll see a snapshot of the performance of the individual component and you can drill down into any level for detailed views and history. You’ll also see new resources details and performance of each individual vCenter, of course, each datacenter, the cluster and those individual ESX servers at all levels. As within all areas of Orion, the user interface makes it easier to see both real time data and gauges, and historical data in charts, and you can customize this usages data back up to a year by default or more if you’d like to.

The Virtualization summary page is a great place to go and get detailed information around the general health again of the infrastructure you virtualized in your environment. And, of course you can drill down on anything you see that you'd like to have more data around, whether it's an individual ESX server, the vCenter, or the datacenter or cluster. You can go ahead to SolarWinds.com and download a free copy of Orion to try it out for yourself, have it up and running in under an hour and get greater visibility into your own virtualization infrastructure there in your own datacenter and across the enterprise.
