SolarWinds Virtualization Manager has a deep understanding of the relationships that exist between virtual datacenter objects such as VMs, hosts, datastores, clusters, and vApps. Using advanced virtualization dependency mapping capabilities, Virtualization Manager can place one or more objects in context on a dependency map so that it is possible to see the related objects.

For example, using virtual dependency mapping, Virtualization Manager can show all of the VMs on a particular datastore, and sort storage I/O from high to low. It can also show all of the datastores being used by a particular host.

Virtualization Manager maintains a complete historical record of configuration data and relationships. This feature is called Time Travel and it allows you to “go back in time” to see the dependencies that existed at a point in time in the past. For example, you can see all of the VMs that were on a particular datastore 3 days ago and which ones were generating the most I/O. This allows you to answer questions such as “what happened to this datastore over the weekend?”

Since Virtual Environments are extremely dynamic, virtualization dependency mapping and Time Travel enables you to track changes over time and perform forensic troubleshooting and problem analysis.
