Frequently Asked Questions About Storage Manager

How does Storage Manager collect data?

Storage Manager uses a variety of methods to collect data, both local and remote. Storage Manager can collect most data remotely, including storage arrays (NAS and SAN), VMware® hosts and virtual machines, Fibre Channel switches, databases (SQL and Oracle®) and file analysis. For physical servers, backups and Exchange, agents are required on those servers. Some of the methods that Storage Manager uses to collect data includes: SMI-S, Telnet/SSH, SNMP, CIFS/NFS, API, WMI, SQL queries, Web Services, command line, and log parsing.

How is data stored?

Data is stored in a MySQL® database that is installed as part of the Storage Manager server.

Can I distribute Storage Manager management reports to colleagues and management?

Both built-in and customized reports can be easily shared among colleagues and workgroups. Reports can be scheduled and emailed to a set of recipients or published to local or remote directories for use with portals or other applications (such as Microsoft Sharepoint®). Reports can be generated as HTML, CSV, or charts, allowing users to leverage other applications (such as Microsoft Office® Excel®) to analyze the data. Storage Manager’s grouping functions allow you to create groups of devices and objects to match your business requirements (departmental level reporting and chargeback).

Can I see reports that consolidate data from different devices and platforms?

Storage Manager gathers storage, server, backup, and application data from different devices, applications, and platforms. That data is normalized and presented in a uniform interface. You can see summary reports and have direct access to detailed information within like categories. For example, you can access information on all storage capacity and usage from all supported storage vendors in a single report.

Will Storage Manager send alerts in the event of problems?

Yes, Storage Manager can alert you to issues so that actions can be taken to prevent data loss or system downtime. Profiler can alert you directly via email, can feed traps into other alerting systems, or can execute scripts to take a user-defined action.

How does Storage Manager impact the environment?

The impact of Storage Manager is minimal and non-invasive to the devices and applications it is monitoring, requiring no reboots or special configuration changes or packages.
