The Gauges Sometimes Are Difficult To Customize, We Stick With The Engineers Toolset Gauges

Reviewed Version 10
Full Review:
This is a huge step from the capabilities from Engineers Toolset. I had to fight with some of our other engineers to convince them to move in the Solarwinds direction. They were looking at EG, Netmon and Dopplerview with a solid decision on EG, I finally convinced them to do a online demo. A week later they were telling me how awesome that NPM/Orion was, like I’ve never heard of it. I had to remind them that I was the one that suggested this to them a long time ago. I’ve been trying to get our director to purchase Solarwinds the whole time, but my role changing from engineer to System Support Manger, he wanted to leave the decision up to the engineers. This program and all of its ongoing monitoring, top talkers, top latent connections with real time statics, gauges and reporting features are outstanding. Our network engineer likes it alot. Our director couldn’t compete the $80K EG price with Solarwinds price of NPM & Orion at less than half of that price. I don’t think our engineers and our director can be happier. Our director will ask our network engineer, I need to monitor a particular asset. The network engineer will create a custom view with all the goodies in it, then send it to him via a URL and bam! He has a custom view in a matter of a few moments with the live and historical information within one custom view. No MIBS we have to import and spend time dialing in and then creating views. Just drag and drop and you are done. Best buy for 2011 hands down!

Modular Packages Means Workflow Can Seem A Bit Disjointed

Reviewed Version 9.5.0
Full Review:
I've used SolarWinds Orion for about two years now and have found that it's even more versatile than the big hammer I keep in my garage! The web-based interface provides instant, constant updates as to the status of our network to Helpdesk staff, Tech Staff and Management, each can have their own tailored views with varying degrees of simplicity and varying levels of the "Ooooh, what's that!!?" factor, which is fantastic for an office with a large wall-mounted display. With a little bit of thought, we were able to create solutions to suit everyone in the department, from email and SMS notifications when rogue machines came online to interactive maps of network and server statuses. There's a lot of potential with this software and I know we've only scratched the surface.

Is the above still true ? That is, can I create "workflows" that span across packages - say NPM and NCM ? Such that an alert goes out on a config compliance failure...?

Yes, still true. Most of Orion product can run integrated in a single pane of glass and allow for seamless navigation between products and modules (true for NPM NCM and also for many others). As far as your alert on config compliance failure, the way to achieve this is to configure a real time alert for config changes and when it fires off, launch the compliance report which will scan your new config and detect compliance violations

I think Orion NPM is the best product out there in the market right now. As I mentioned the advantages in the Pros section, it is very easy to install and maintain. The web interface looks nice and clear. It definitely attracts outsiders with your network performance and alerts you when somethings goes wrong. The only thing I am little concerned is it would be more helpful if they included the Application Performance Monitoring also along with Orion NPM. But I think I am asking too much. I would give 5 starts without a doubt. I am saying it with an experience of working for 4 years with Orion NPM. Anyone who is looking for a monitoring software, I would highly recommend Solarwinds Orion NPM.

We purchased NPM two months ago. While we were excited to use the application, we have still not been able to deploy it as we discovered a major bug in their import tool. If your devices use SNMP strings with any special chars then your import will fail. It appears their code does not delimit special chars properly and all imports will fail. We have already opened up a ticket with the help desk but have not even been given a timeline on when this will be fixed. I look forward in using NPM once this gets resolved.

I am sorry that you had a bad first experience. I have researched your case and our Support team has recently contacted you with a fix to be applied to your system which should resolve the issue you encountered.
