I've been using Kiwi every job I've taken in ten years. I recommend a GREP tool (such an WinGREP) to parse logs and find what you're investigating. The more you invest in understanding the syslog messages of your vendors devices, the more value you will get out of Kiwi. Syslogs are the most underutilized resource in networking. The worst thing is the volume of basic activity. Kiwi can be configured to focus past that. If you invest in learning the syslogs of your devices, you can mimic alerting of far more expensive systems. -- -- Using just Kiwi we are instantly alerted when: Any Emergency, Criticial or Error level message (H/W failures, memory crashes, tracebacks, MALLOCs, wifi radio down, astro errors); Routing failures; Spantree instabilities; IGMP issues; Power supply & fan failures; High temps; Port scans against Cisco rtrs (RSHELL attempts); User ports that loops, flap; port-channel issues; IPs conflicts with your devices; misconfigured IP on PCs (thru proxy-arp & debug of HSRP packets); NetBIOS floods from Windows viruses; Honeypot hits; Track Logins; Detect new devices sending syslogs. -- -- Plus (obviously) we have complete history of our devices' logs. This includes every connection crossing our firewalls, which is very powerful when working with application developers who may not have any idea how their apps work at a port & protocol level. -- -- With a powerful SINGLE-thread-performing CPUs and a powerful disk array Kiwi can reliably handle much higher than rated. However, optimal ruleset configuration is key if you want to see high throughput managed. We've had a single server handling over 6 million messsages an hour for about 4 years. This year we reached 10 million with a single firewall loggin to one Kiwi server and we saw the first ever instability. Kiwi is publicly rated for only 1-2 million. -- -- I rely on this
