What are the differences between running Kiwi Syslog Server as a service versus standard application?
When you install Kiwi Syslog Server as a service, it is made up of two parts:
- The Service Manager is an interactive GUI application that controls the state of the service (stop, start, install, uninstall). When a user logs into the system or web console, the service handles the audible alarms and the visual display of syslog messages that have been received and processed. Using the File | Setup menu, the user can setup the properties of the service and define rules that contain specific filters and actions for the service to act on.
- The service is a non-interactive process (no GUI) that receives and processes incoming syslog messages. It runs automatically at system startup time without need for a user to be logged in. The service is controlled by the Service Manager.
How is Kiwi Syslog Server licensed?
Kiwi Syslog Server is licensed on a "Per Install" basis. You are required to purchase a separate license for each system that you intend to install and register the program on.
A single installation of Kiwi Syslog Server is capable of receiving syslog messages from a virtually unlimited number of devices. Simply configure each device to send syslog information to the IP address of the system that you install Kiwi Syslog Server on.
For example, if you wish to install Kiwi Syslog Server on two systems (one in your DMZ and one on your local LAN) and you want each of these systems to receive syslog messages from multiple network devices, then you would need two separate "Single Install" licenses regardless of the number of devices that will be sending to these installations.
How do I configure my network devices for use with Kiwi Syslog Server?
