Virtual server, or virtual private server (VPS), refers to a virtual machine used by an individual customer of an Internet hosting service. Virtual server emphasizes a virtual machine’s functional equivalence to a separate physical computer dedicated to a customer’s individual needs and affording the privacy of a separate physical computer, though running software on the same physical computer as other customers’ virtual machines. Such a virtual machine can be configured to run as a server computer running server software and is sometimes called a virtual dedicated server (VDS). Virtual servers run their own full-fledged operating system and can be independently rebooted. Partitioning a single server so that it appears as multiple servers has become more common since the development of virtualization software and technologies for microcomputers.
