vSphere Profiles is a new feature that has been implemented as of ESXi version 5. vSphere Profiles allow you to group like kinds of storage together based on I/O and capacity characteristics. This can be done manually today and VMware® is trying to automate this with their new VASA storage API. The VASA API is intended to be implemented by storage vendors and will enable the hypervisor to interrogate the storage as to its capabilities. When manually setting up vSphere profiles, users will need some form of native storage tools that span across their arrays so that they can get an idea of LUNs of equal performance and size. An example of such a tool is SolarWinds Storage Manager, powered by Profiler.
