vSphere 5 from VMware®, the Dynamic Resource Scheduler (DRS), now takes into account storage I/O as well as storage capacity when moving workloads between hosts. Prior to vSphere 5, a VM could be moved to a host with insufficient storage resources (capacity or I/O), resulting in performance degradation. vSphere 5 Storage DRS operates best if the various types of storage are categorized based on their performance and capacity using Profiles. These profiles can then be grouped (like storage) into datastore clusters. Understanding the performance and capacity of storage can be complicated, and only a little has been written about the use of vSphere 5 Storage DRS. A few of the things to consider prior to implementing Storage DRS can be found in this SolarWinds blog post.
