Thin Provisioning is the technique used to optimize the utilization of storage in a virtualized environment. Thin Provisioning accomplishes this task by over-subscribing physical storage resources based on the expectation that not all storage allocated to a given VM will be consumed by that VM. Thin Provisioning can be done at both the hypervisor layer or within the array itself; however, it should not be done in both places. While thin provisioning allows you to over-subscribe physical storage, if you do not adequately plan your physical storage capacity, it can lead to disastrous results. In the best case, thin provisioned VMs that run out of physical storage will be suspended. In the worst case, the VM will crash and data may be lost. Tools such as SolarWinds Storage Manager, Powered by Profiler allow you to report on thin provisioning whether it is done within the array or within the VMware hypervisor.
