Server virtualization refers to the process of running server workloads as virtual machines. Server virtualization allows IT departments to optimize the utilization of their existing hardware to run more server workloads without impacting workload performance. A hypervisor (such as those provided by VMware® ESXi and Microsoft® Hyper-V) enables server virtualization by allocating the physical hardware’s resources, such as memory and processing, to multiple virtual servers, each of which resides above the hypervisor on the physical machine.
