IDE (Integrated Drive Electronics) is a hardware interface widely-used for connecting hard disks, CD-ROMs and tape drives to a PC and other systems. IDE is the first version of what is now officially known as the ATA/ATAPI (Advanced Technology Attachment/AT Attachment Packet Interface) interface or specification. It was developed in the 1980s by Control Data Corporation® and Compaq® Computer and consists of a connector, signaling protocol, and interface definition. In IDE, the drive controller is integrated into the drive; it is not a separate controller on or connected to the motherboard.
