File system virtualization, or file virtualization, is a strategy used by some operating-system virtualizers to provide file-level copy-on-write (COW) optimization mechanisms. File system virtualization allows a standard file system to share between logical partitions. Because the partitions that interchange the files automatically create their own copies, the data is easier to back up, more space-efficient and simpler to cache than in the block-level COW schemes used by whole-system virtualizers. Whole-system virtualizers are beneficial in that they can work with non-native file systems, and create and roll back snapshots of the entire system state.
