Fibre Channel Single Byte (FC-SB) is the industry-standard command protocol for ESCON (Enterprise Systems Connection), a type of data connection, over Fibre Channel. Fibre Channel Single Byte has second and third versions known as FC-SB-2 and FC-SB-3 (FICON), respectively. IBM created ESCON to connect its mainframe computers to peripheral devices. A proposed FC-SB-4 standard aims to define a new operating mode that will significantly improve the performance of certain types of data transfer operations, compared to the previous standards.
