Fault tolerance, also sometimes referred to as failure tolerance, refers to an approach to system design that allows a system to continue performing even when one of its components is failing. Fault tolerance solutions may allow a system to continue operating at reduced capacity rather than shutting down completely following a failure. Various monitoring utilities can automatically notify an administrator when a system’s fault tolerance mechanism is invoked and the system’s performance reduced.
