Copy On Write (COW) is an optimization technique for maintaining a copy of a collection of data. Copy On Write (sometimes spelled copy-on-write) does this by copying only data that is modified immediately after the initiation of the replication process. The source data is used to satisfy read requests for both the source data itself and for the unmodified portion of the copy.
