Life cycle of the virtual infrastructure

The entities in Virtualization Manager go through a life cycle of three stages.

Active VMs

Virtual machines which are accessible for data collection and are registered with their hosts or Virtual Center. This is the normal state for virtual machine records. These machines are searchable in the current and historical time frames.

Stale VMs

Virtual machines which are either inaccessible for data collection or unregistered with their hosts or Virtual Center for the defined Active to Stale interval. These virtual machines are searchable but they are displayed dimmed.

Decommissioned VMs

Virtual machines which have been stale for the defined Stale to Decommissioned interval. These virtual machines are no longer searchable in the current time frame but still exist in the data repository as historically searchable records.

The interval between life cycle changes is controlled by system properties. For more information, see Configure system properties.
