Manage nodes, applications, and settings from the web console

You can manage SolarWinds SAM nodes, groups, accounts, alerts, views, and settings. You can also manage the navigation and look of SolarWinds SAM and view information about available product updates.

You may need to log in with an administrator account to perform these actions.

Manage nodes from the web console

On the Web Console, click Settings > All Settings > Manage Nodes.

Unmanage nodes

  1. On the Web Console, click Settings > All Settings > Manage Nodes.
  2. Select the nodes to unmanage, and then click Unmanage.
  3. Follow the prompts as needed.

Edit node properties

  1. On the Web Console, click Settings > All Settings > Manage Nodes.
  2. Check the object to edit, then click Edit Properties.
  3. Edit the node as needed, then click Submit.

View node resources

  1. On the Web Console, click Settings > All Settings > Manage Nodes.
  2. Check a node to view from the list, and then click List Resources on the Node Management toolbar.

Add nodes for monitoring

  1. On the Web Console, click Settings > All Settings > Manage Nodes > Add Node.
  2. Provide the host name or IP Address of the node to add in the host name or IP Address field.
  3. Select the polling method for monitoring and enter the appropriate credentials as needed, then click Next.
  4. Complete the wizard as instructed. When complete, the added node appears in the All Nodes resource.

Delete nodes from monitoring

>Warning: Deleting nodes from monitoring in the web console automatically stops monitoring of all applications and volumes on the deleted nodes.

  1. On the Web Console, click Settings > All Settings > Manage Nodes.
  2. Locate the node to delete using either of the following methods:
    • Use the search tool above the node list to search your Orion database for the node to delete.
    • Select an appropriate Group by: option, and click the appropriate group including the node to delete.
  3. Check the node to delete in the list, and then click Delete on the toolbar.

Manage nodes and applications (Advanced)

Delete applications or volumes from monitoring

  1. Locate the object to delete using either of the following methods:
    • Use the search above the node list to search your Orion database either for the object to delete or for its parent object to delete.
    • Select a Group by: criteria, and then click the appropriate group including the parent node of the object to delete.
  2. If you have a list of node results, click [+] to expand the parent node of the object to delete.
  3. Check the object to delete, and then click Delete on the toolbar, then click OK to confirm deletion.

Promote a node from ICMP to SNMP monitoring

Before you begin:

  • If you have defined any custom properties for monitored nodes, you need to provide appropriate values for the promoted node in the Custom Properties.
  • If you plan to use SNMPv3 to monitor the promoted node, you need to provide the following SNMPv3 credential settings:
    • SNMPv3 User name and Context
    • SNMPv3 Authentication Method and Password/Key
    • SNMPv3 Privacy/Encryption Method and Password/Key

      Read/Write SNMPv3 Credentials are optional, but the public Community String is required

Promoting the node

  1. On the Web Console, click Settings > All Settings > Manage Nodes.
  2. Check the node to promote, click Edit Properties, and then select Most Devices: SNMP and ICMP.
  3. Select the SNMP Version for the promoted node. SolarWinds uses SNMPv2c by default.
  4. Enter the appropriate credentials, then click Validate SNMP to confirm your SNMP settings. When done, click Submit, and then click OK.

Promote a node to WMI monitoring

  1. On the Web Console, click Settings > All Settings > Manage Nodes.
  2. Check the node to promote, click Edit Properties, and then select Windows Servers: WMI and ICMP.
  3. Enter the appropriate WMI credentials.
  4. Click Test to confirm your settings. When done, click Submit, and then click OK.

Set node management states

Setting a node to an unmanaged state automatically suspends the management on the selected node.

Changing the management state of a node

  1. On the Web Console, click Settings > All Settings > Manage Nodes.
  2. Check the node to change, and then click Unmanage or Remanage, as appropriate for the selected node.
  3. If you selected Unmanage, you must provide start and end times and dates for your management suspension, and then click OK.

Unscheduled node polling and rediscovery

Performing an unscheduled poll or rediscovery

  1. On the Web Console, click Settings > All Settings > Manage Nodes.
  2. Check the node to poll or rediscover, and then select the appropriate action from More Actions drop down menu.

Unmanage a node using the Unmanage Scheduling Utility

Before you begin:

  • The Unmanage Scheduling Utility can be found at Start > SolarWinds Orion > Advanced Features > Unmanage Scheduling Utility.
  1. Select either New Task or open an existing task by clicking Edit Task, then click Add Items.
  2. Click on the Web tab and select the items to schedule to be stopped by checking the check box next to the item name.
  3. Click Add, then select the length of time you would like the selected item to be stopped.
  4. Click OK. Optionally, click Save Task to save your selections for future use.

Viewing the details of a selected item's schedule

  1. Check the item and its details appear in the Task Item Properties pane.
  2. You can change the settings of the item's schedule by selecting an item and clicking Set Duration.
  3. You can delete an item from the unmanage schedule by selecting it and clicking Delete Checked Items.

It is possible to create a conflict of schedules if you choose the same item to be stopped using both the web console and the Unmanage Scheduling Utility with different durations.

Access nodes using HTTP, SSH, and Telnet

The SolarWinds Web Console supports the use of HTTP, SSH, and Telnet protocols for remote device access if associated applications like PuTTy and FiSSH on your SolarWinds server are properly registered. Launch remote access applications from any Details view as follows:

  • To browse directly to the viewed device using a web browser, click .
  • To open a secure shell (SSH) to a monitored device, click .
  • To open a Telnet session with a monitored device, click .

Before you begin:

  • This function only works with Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
  1. Enable toolset integration on your user account. On the Web Console, click Settings > Accounts then select an account, then click Edit.

  2. Set Allow Browser Integration to Yes.
  3. Open the Node Details view for the server you want to view remotely.
  4. There you will see the following toolbar in the top tight corner of the web console:
