SolarWinds Extends Award-Winning Orion Management Capabilities to VoIP

New Module Enhances Orion Network Performance Monitor to Enable Problem Diagnosis and Monitoring for Voice Quality Across the Wide Area Network

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- July, 23 2007 -- SolarWinds, a leader in network management software, today unveiled Orion VoIP Monitor, a new module in the Orion product line. The module will leverage enhancements included in the latest version of Orion Network Performance Monitor (Orion) platform v. 8.5. Orion VoIP Monitor will be previewed in SolarWinds booth #1237 at Networkers at Cisco Live conference held in Anaheim, Calif. July 23 through July 26.

With the new Orion VoIP Monitor module, SolarWinds will help network engineers overcome the biggest challenges faced in VoIP deployments: concern over call quality, the need for expertise with new, unfamiliar technologies, and the ability to diagnose, predict and resolve complex network problems that can affect voice data across Wide Area Networks (WANs). Orion VoIP Monitor combined with Orion delivers network visibility, alerts, graphs, and reporting on one platform for real-time troubleshooting, diagnostics, and fault and performance management across the network infrastructure.

"We have relied upon Orion to manage our network for two years," said Don Barry, network engineering manager, IFCO Systems N.A., Inc. "SolarWinds products are not only easy to use, they also enable us to quickly spot, isolate, diagnose and repair problems before they impact our users, which is essential when managing a business critical applications such as VoIP. We look forward to rolling out the new Orion VoIP Module and expect it to have the same immediate value we experienced with our other SolarWinds products."

Orion VoIP Monitor is designed for network professionals who need to know exactly how VoIP traffic is performing on their WAN. Orion VoIP Monitor uses Cisco's IP Service Level Agreements (SLAs) to collect network performance statistics including MOS, jitter, network latency, packet loss, and other important VoIP Quality of Service (QoS) metrics.

Orion VoIP Monitor also simplifies the configuration of IP SLA on routers by automatically configuring the routers to collect VoIP QoS statistics. Key benefits of Orion VoIP Monitor include:

  • Integrated Network Management -- Orion VoIP Monitor is fully integrated with Orion to provide comprehensive visibility into both VoIP quality, and the underlying systems and protocols on the network that the VoIP environment relies upon.
  • Capacity Planning Tool -- Orion VoIP Monitor provides a capacity planning tool to measure expected voice quality in advance of VoIP deployment.
  • Detailed Visibility into Performance Metrics -- Orion VoIP Monitor provides out-of-the-box monitoring of Cisco's Unified Communications Manager.
  • Simplified Deployments -- Orion VoIP Monitor provides auto-configuration of routers to facilitate deployments and to provide significant time savings.
  • Quick Implementation Time -- Orion VoIP Monitor can usually be installed and collecting data within an hour. Many conventional network management systems take weeks to just deploy basic monitoring, reporting and alerting.
  • Low Operational Cost -- Orion VoIP Monitor runs on Windows servers, which are considerably less expensive to operate and maintain than legacy UNIX systems.
  • Ease of Use and Reliability -- Orion VoIP Monitor is a proven product designed by network engineers for network engineers and offers the same ease of use as other SolarWinds products. The intuitive user interface and wizard-based setup doesn't require costly installation, training or expensive consulting services.

"By using the Orion VoIP Monitor with Orion, network engineers have at their fingertips the essential data required to monitor the VoIP environment and correct any problems before they impact users, while also ensuring that all the other applications across the WAN are meeting expected service levels," said Kenny Van Zant, chief product strategist, SolarWinds. "The Orion VoIP Monitor module offers these valuable features while being low cost, easy to deploy, and easy to use."

Orion VoIP Monitor is in the process of being tested to become a part of the Cisco Technology Developer Program for interoperability with Cisco IP SLA. SolarWinds was recently granted membership in the Cisco Technology Developer Program.

As part of that membership, Orion Network Performance Monitor and SolarWinds Engineer's Toolset products are compatible with Cisco routing and switching solutions. These award-winning products support Cisco NetFlow® protocol which is available on all Cisco routers and switches and provides network engineers with a simple, comprehensive solution for monitoring network traffic and performance data.
