AUSTIN, TX—September 10, 2007—SolarWinds, a leader in network management software, announced today that Security Horizon, who specialize in information security (INFOSEC) consulting and training, not only demonstrates and utilizes SolarWinds Toolsets as part of its training curriculum and consulting service, but will also be moderating a new security forum on SolarWinds' community site, Thwack (www.thwack.com).
Training
Security Horizon is one of only two companies contracted by the National Security Agency to deliver training under NSA's INFOSEC Assurance Training and Rating Program (www.iatrp.com) to students. As such, the tools that Security Horizon uses to teach these courses must meet the same high standards that are expected of its trainers. Security Horizon has partnered with SolarWinds to use Engineer's Toolset in its policy and procedure training, as well as to offer a full licensed version of SolarWinds Standard Toolset to all students who take their INFOSEC Evaluation Methodology (IEM) class.
"The first day of the IEM class, we hand out the Standard Toolset DVD to each student," said Brian Kirouac, CTO and Principal Security Consultant for Security Horizon. "During the class, students learn about some of the tools that we use in different areas, such as IP Network Browser, Router Password Decryption, MAC Address Discovery and Switch Port Mapper. Then, students have the opportunity to sign up to receive a full license of the Standard Toolset. We've had a great response to this program so far. More than 50 percent of the students that have attended our training sign up to receive the Standard Toolset."
Consulting
On the consulting side, as one of its tools, Security Horizon uses Engineer's Toolset during INFOSEC Assessments and Evaluations. They spend time with customers to show the value of utilizing easy-to-use, high-quality networking tools to help implement and test security policies and procedures.
"While onsite, performing technical evaluations, we take time to show our customers how to perform part of the evaluation so they can continue internally with the security lifecycle," said Kirouac. "Using tools in the Engineer's Toolset, our customers can easily perform their own SNMP scans, network discovery, ensure their DNS is configured properly and much more. We show them how they can benefit from using solid networking tools, but ultimately we leave it up to them as to which products to purchase. Most network engineers jump at the chance to purchase Engineer's Toolset because they can accomplish so much, in so little time."
New Security Forum on Thwack
SolarWinds realizes the importance of security processes and procedures to form a complete network management solution. For this reason, SolarWinds has invited Security Horizon, led by Kirouac, to moderate a new security forum which is now live on SolarWinds' community site, Thwack (www.thwack.com). Visitors to Thwack can tap into Security Horizon's vast expertise in the field of security assessments, security evaluations and much more.
"I am looking forward to collaborating with the SolarWinds community on the topic of network security," said Kirouac. "With well over 12,000 registered users, I'm sure there will be a great deal of dialog and advice shared in this forum."
