SolarWinds Marks First Year of Growing User Community Site with Release of Free Microsoft Exchange Monitoring Tool

16,000 Network Engineers Rely on Thwack to Get Help, Share Advice, Interact with Product Experts and Contribute to Ongoing Innovation

AUSTIN, Texas – June 10, 2008 – SolarWinds announced today that its online community for network engineers, Thwack, celebrated its first anniversary. To commemorate the event, SolarWinds released a new free tool for monitoring Microsoft Exchange servers.

The Thwack community site, located at http://thwack.com, was founded by network management software leader SolarWinds to provide its more than 16,000 members with a venue for sharing ideas, technical tips and educational content. The community offers a variety of support resources, including interaction with SolarWinds product development experts and access to a global base of SolarWinds users.

To mark the anniversary, SolarWinds has released another free tool to the broader IT community. The SolarWinds Exchange Monitor,
available today at http://www.solarwinds.com/exchange-monitor, helps IT and Windows system administrators reduce e-mail downtime and service disruptions. The tool provides a desktop dashboard for monitoring Exchange server health in real time, including:
• Monitoring Exchange services to quickly diagnose system, e-mail and calendaring problems
• Identifying growing mail queues that might indicate larger problems, such as transport failures, Internet connection failures or virus activity
• Monitoring the server that Exchange is physically running on for disk usage, CPU utilization and memory utilization

“Thwack enables users of SolarWinds products to leverage community knowledge and technical contributions to quickly resolve problems and exchange ideas,” said Eric Van Tol, operations manager at Atlantech Online, Inc. “SolarWinds made a giant step in the right direction with the introduction of Thwack, involving customers during its development. The fact that everyone from the SolarWinds team, including product managers, developers, and support personnel, contribute to Thwack regularly is a testament to SolarWinds’ commitment to its community.”

SolarWinds Customer Loyalty Drives Growing Community Involvement
Over the last year, the Thwack community has seen explosive growth in new membership and interaction. Thwack members include network engineers from across the globe that share common interests in network management and SolarWinds products. Demonstrating their passion for these topics, Thwack’s more than 16,000 registered users have contributed almost 30,000 community posts.

“We were one of the first community sites for IT network professionals, and a year later, we’re amazed by the commitment of our Thwack members to helping each other and improving the overall state of network management,” said SolarWinds Head Geek Josh Stephens, who also authors the popular Geek Speak blog hosted on Thwack. “Our team is honored to interact daily with the global community of network engineers who keep the world’s IT systems up and running.”

One of the most popular aspects of the Thwack community is the Content Sharing Zone. There, members can post their own templates, scripts, reports and how-to documents to share with fellow community members. In the past year, user-contributed components have been accessed more than 10,000 times. The community site also offers forums where members can discuss general network management issues, as well as share their experiences using SolarWinds’ products, including Orion, Cirrus, ipMonitor, LANsurveyor and Engineer’s Toolset.

“The emergence of open source as a viable alternative in product environments has demonstrated both the power and benefit of community,” said Tracy Corbo, senior analyst at IDC. “This same community model can be used and applied to commercial software projects, resulting in direct benefits to both the vendor and the end users.”
